2025, heartwood of a cypress tree infected with Stereum taxodii fungus
Stereum taxodii is a fungus which infects baldcypress (Taxodium distichum) trees. Starting at the crown and making its way to the root, the fungus moves through the heartwood of the tree, creating long cylindrical holes. This fungus usually infects old trees. Cypress can, and usually do, continue to thrive even with an infection. Once the tree dies, so does the fungus.
